Participate in the first endurance reading of "The Testimonies of Mother Ann Lee"

April 10, 2017

Join us to participate in the first endurance reading of the 1816 Testimonies of Mother Ann Lee, presented by Shaker Museum | Mount Lebanon at the Basilica Hudson’s annual 24-HOUR DRONE: Experiments in Sound and Music on April 29-30.

Mother Ann Lee, the illiterate daughter of a blacksmith in Manchester, England, was the mystic and visionary founder of the Shakers. She placed gender equality, pacifism, and a profound sense of community at the core of the Shakers’ beliefs and the Testimonies, a compilation of her statements and the memories of those who knew her, is a foundational Shaker text.

The Testimonies will be read in its entirety over an estimated ten hours, beginning at 2:00 pm on April 29. To participate, please email Include your name and contact information, and indicate your top three preferences among the following time slots:

  • 1. 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
  • 2. 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  • 3. 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
  • 4. 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
  • 5. 10:00 pm – 12:00 am

Each reader will be assigned a sequential number within the two-hour window and will be expected to read for 10 minutes. The text will be provided and there is no preparation necessary (though if you want to read all 400+ pages of the Testimonies, go right ahead!) Along with the opportunity to participate in this remarkable event, you’ll receive a free pass to 24-Hour Drone, a drink on the house, an adventure, encounters with cool people, and - just possibly - a moment or two of transcendence.
